Anabelle's Glow Run: 5k with my Daughter and 3k Family Fun Run

"I just ran my second 5k!  It was so cold and windy.  When I got to the end, I looked at my score.  I got 4th place out of 0 to 10 year olds!!  I was so so so proud of myself!  ..."
Naomi, age 7

"I was number 210 Sparrow.  I ran with my dad. We had a lot of glow sticks.  We also had lots of treats and cookies after the race.  We even had hot chocolate.  My first race was so fun!"
Sam, age 5

Not too long ago I published this post:

Running and Racing with Our Kids: Lasting Benefits and Things to Consider.

In this post I shared that my middle daughter Naomi and I were hoping to race a 5k together for her second 5k.  Well, we did it!  And I can honestly say that our race - her race -will go down as one of my MOST special running memories in my 20 plus years of running.  This is true for so many reasons.  One of the biggest reasons is because of how inspired I was by her and another was because I got to see how incredibly proud she was of herself. It was an experience that affirmed my belief that running (and running with our kids) has so much to offer. The lessons we learn through running carry over into life in some powerful ways!

This last Friday, our whole family of five headed down to the Les Schwab Amplitheater in Bend, OR for an evening of bouncy houses, face paint, glow sticks, live music and RUNNING!  We all registered for the Anabelle's Angel Glow Run for the 5k and 3k fun run (Naomi and I for the 5k and the others came along to support her and to run the 3k fun run.)  What a fantastic event!  Not only did it support an important cause (read more here) but it was FUN, FAMILY FRIENDLY, and AFFORDABLE.  As most of us know, races can be expensive these days and the idea of shelling out $25-30 (or more) for a 5k entry fee for ourselves AND our kids can seem absurd! Thank goodness that we are seeing community events like this being offered in more and more places. Family Fitness all across the country is growing because of it.  And with events like this, the community is coming together to support causes that are near and dear to their hearts as well.  We will be back next year!

Gearing up.
Getting ready for this race was so much fun!  Since it was a glow run, the goal was to get GLOWY!  I finally found a good use for all my old neon race shirts!!  Score!  My husband went to the store and bought a ton of glow gear to add to our neon race clothes.  For my son (age 5) this would be the first race he can remember.  So fun to see him so excited!

I have so many neon/glowy race shirts and gear in my closet!  It was nice to use some of it for this race .

Before we left the house, I made sure Naomi knew that this was her race to run whatever way she wanted.  Even though we've been running together when we can and working up to running a 5k, I didn't want her to feel any pressure.  She just responded, "Mom, I'm racing this one faster.  I ran my first one really slow and for fun but this one will be fun and I want to run my best."

Note:  Not once in our running together has the finishing time or time on a watch with mile splits been mentioned.  In fact, Naomi has never even been aware that I've had a watch on (mostly just my Garmin to keep track of our distance.)  Our runs have been and will continue to be about fun and quality time together.  This race was the first time Naomi connected a time on the clock with her running since it was a timed race and she wanted to see her name on the results. Finishing in 28:40 for her 5k was exciting to her mostly because she saw how she ranked with the other kids (and LOTS of kids in this 5k!!)

The 5k

Before the race.  She was so excited! And there was a beautiful (and full) rainbow stretching across the sky.

Naomi's race was special from the beginning to the very end.  Every step running next to my sweet girl was food for my soul.  Her's too.  She told jokes and made me laugh, commented on the people and scenery around her, and revealed such a positive and self-loving spirit with the words she spoke out loud to herself.  It's amazing how much we can learn from our children if we stop to observe and listen.

Some highlights about Naomi's race:
  • She had a smile on her face for most of the race.
  • This was truly fun.
  • We took walk breaks in every mile.
  • She led the way and decided how she wanted to run it.
  • I talked to her lots and reminded her the whole way of how special this was, how proud I was of her, and how much she inspired me!
  • One of the first things Naomi noticed was just how much easier it was running on pavement compared to the dirt river trail next to our house.
  • She wanted an age group award so she kept asking me if she though she'd get one.  I just reminded her to do her best.  At the time I didn't realize her age group was up to 10.  (Note: Again, time or place has never been a focus for us.  However, Naomi has been involved in running for long enough (her own races at a much younger age and in seeing her parents race) that age group and race time are very familiar terms to her. To her, this was a fun goal.
  • Near the end of the race, she finally looked up at me and said "Mom, I'm tired.  This kind of hurts.  How much longer."  When I told her we only had about a half mile to go, she smiled and said, "Well, good to know! I can do this!"  Yes! Yes, you can!
Some mental tricks/strategies we used:
  • We broke the race up into parts.  For each mile, we took a short walk break to recharge for the next one.
  • Looking ahead at the different colored shirts and making it a game.  25 points for blue shirts, 10 points for yellow...  This was all in fun and for awhile she tried counting them up but it ended up just being a fun little mental strategy for moving forward.  And no, she didn't count out loud when she passed until we were out of ear shot.
  • Imagining a rope attached to us and a runner ahead of us, pulling us ahead.  This worked especially well when her older sister was right ahead of us.
  • Relaxing the body.  Whenever I looked over and she had her little fists clenched, I'd just remind her to relax her hands and body and run naturally.
  • Small reminders that helped her focus on her running and keeping it fun:  quick steps, lean forward, look ahead, smile. Note:   I think most kids have naturally beautiful running strides.  I don't think we need to teach them proper running form. This is my opinion but from what I can see, most kids just run...we don't need to make it something they think too much about when it comes to form, pace, stride -- just run and have fun! The rest comes naturally!  These reminders were just to distract her from being tired.  Gosh, what I'd give for her stride and form!
  • Self Talk.  Naomi did an incredible job telling herself positive things along the way.
Exhausted, Happy, Proud!

At the end of the race, Naomi was exhausted but BEAMING with pride.  She did it!  She ran hard, had fun, and gave her all at the end.  The other kids had fun too!  As I mentioned, I didn't run with them but I know they had a blast.  At once point during our 5k, I saw my oldest daughter racing past us and on to her 3k finish.  This was a huge boost for all of us to see each other! After the race, we waiting for awards and prizes, danced to the music in our glowiness and enjoyed the first of many races together as an entire family!

As soon as we got home from the race, Naomi grabbed her journal, glued her race bib in and wrote about her race.  Before bed, she looked up at me and said, "Mom, I'm so PROUD of myself!  I ran hard.  And I was 4th out of 0 to 10 year olds!" How can this not carry over into her life in positive ways?  She gained self confidence and experienced what it's like to push herself and give her best all the way to the end.  She discovered that even if something is hard and hurts, it can still be fun and rewarding.  And she realized that she is capable of so much more than she thought.  There are no doubts in my mind that this race will be something that carries over to her life in incredibly positive ways.

Endnote:
My kids have naturally taken an interest in running because they see us make it part of our daily lives and LOVE doing it.  They've actually been the ones to ask us if they can tag along.  Eventually, my kids wanted to run because they saw it as something that provided them with special time with us.  Now, I can honestly say that they have come to genuinely love running too!  I hope this continues.

When I run with my kids, I try to keep what I call the Four F's in mind:

The Four F's of Running with Kids:
  1. Fun. Keep it fun!
  2. Follow their lead. Let the child decide what they want running to be.  Maybe they will want to race and maybe they just want running to be about spending time together or playing a game.
  3. Foster a love for running.  Model a love for running and help keep running positive so your child grows to love running too.
  4. Family friendly.  Try to find ways to include the whole family in running as a way to promote family fitness and bonding.

Have you ever done a glow run?
Does your community offer family friendly and affordable races like this?  So far, I'm seeing that Bend has so much to offer the family!  I'm especially looking forward to this race series for kids put on my Lay It Our Events:  Kids Rock the Races.

Random 8 Wednesday: Wrinkles, My Body Hurts, Messes...

It's a bullets kind of day!

  • The above picture is what my kitchen looks like most mornings.  Every cupboard open, stove on, dog wanting breakfast, kids asking for three things at once, everyone making some sort of noise (singing, humming, shouting down the stairs, looking for shoes and socks), and really just a whole mess of multi tasking.  It really hasn't been too stressful...just busy.  I know, I could plan ahead and make lunches the night before but at the end of the day I'm tired and just want to kiss the kids good night and push things off for the morning.  The difference between my husband and myself:  EVERYTHING.  When he is in charge of lunches and breakfast, the kitchen counter is somehow mostly clear and things are executed in a timely and order fashion.
  • I'm barely moving today after doing a Jillian Michael's workout on Monday.  I knew I'd feel this way.  My first time getting back into workouts like this always put me in pain for a few days.  It's quite humbling!  My chest and butt might be feeling it the worst.  Kind of funny to watch myself hobbling around the house.  Now, if I can just maintain Jillian 2 times a week, I'm excited to see some results other than the painful kind.

  • Approaching 36 next month means wrinkles are starting to show.  My biggest wrinkles are right between my eyes.  This is from my stress face.  Like when kids are driving me nuts or I'm annoyed by something, I realize that I sort of have a scowl going on...my eyes kind of scrunch together and my forehead creases. Yikes.  I've got to cut that out! So no more scowling.  Wondering if I can keep my face relaxed the next time my kids start fighting or whining about chores. Relaxed face, calm demeanor in the midst of disorder?   It's my new kinda serious goal.  Might be a little like teaching an old dog new tricks.  What are the stats about forming habits??  How long does it take to make something a habit?  I suppose a "Keep a Calm Face" sticker chart for mom might help with this habit.
  • ENJOYING our KIDS.  What a concept.  I think life gets so darn busy sometimes that we can just go through the motions with sports, school, homework, bedtime routines, dinners, etc.  But it's much harder than it sounds to slow down and ENJOY our kids!  Truly enjoy their company with nothing else going on.  Laugh at their jokes (they are actually funny these days!), sit on the couch and play a game or just ...sit.  I want my kids to grow up with memories of feeling like Mom and Dad really enjoyed them and not just managed them.  This is one reason why Wednesday night is one of my favorite nights:  We all sit on the couch and watch Survivor with nothing else going on!
  • I think if a blogger got an award for the most deleted posts after hitting publish, it might just be me.  I have a love/hate relationship with blogging.  On one hand, I want to get back into it again (regularly) but on the other hand, I'm feeling like I want a new blog or at least a blog facelift ...possibly transfer to a different URL and blog platform.  So, I'm thinking of finding some website geek to help a girl out!  But no real excuses for pulling posts....I think really, it comes down to pulling the publish trigger too soon and then realizing I put some really crappy writing out there that was actually more for me anyway.  Note to self:  Stop being a blog flake!
  • I updated my resume!  Man, that was kind of painful at first.  Blowing the dust off a professional resume when I've been home with my kids for going on six years made for some digging and gathering of all the things I've done. Oh, and it took resume clean-up to realize that all along I've been saying I have a Masters of Art but really I have a Masters of Science.  Not a big deal but still...  It would have be easier if I'd written more down when it comes to the things I've volunteered for, graduate classes, etc.  When I did finally get a draft done, it was neat to see.  And it feels good!  No, I'm not applying for anything specific...just an update for some possibilities in the nearer future.
  • This house is definitely starting to feel like MY HOME!  Gosh, that feels good.  I want it to be a very long time before we move again!  Currently, my living room has 3 different yellows on the wall.  The cool color I used when we first moved in wasn't cutting it.  My husband hated it and really, I'm a WARM color kind of gal.  And I love COLOR.  Our house is pretty bland right now.  I have one more yellow/tan to try and then I hope to paint the living room and part of the kitchen area soon.  Any favorite warm tan or yellow paint colors??
What are you favorite yellow or warm tan paint colors that would be good in a living room?

  • Last but not least, does it get any better than FALL?!  The picture below is of a street here in Bend that I drive several times a day.  When the leaves started changing I kept telling myself to stop to capture the beauty!  I finally made myself stop because winter is coming quickly and the leaves are almost gone now!

1.  Favorite yellow paint colors that would be good in living rooms?
2.  Do you do strength work?  Have you done Jillian Michael's workouts?
3.  What are the ways you ENJOY your kids the most (games, cuddles, stories, dates)??
4.  When was the last time you updated a resume?
5.  Do you make school lunches for your kids?  How many kids?

My 8 Positive Energy Boosters

I met a new friend for coffee this morning.  We agreed to meet at 9:00 and I figured we'd have a short introduction, finish our coffee and head out on our day within the hour.  Three hours later, coffee long gone, and I was still enjoying every moment with this lady. Our conversations ranged from athletic goals to parenthood to concepts of success and so much more.  My time with Corie (also new to Bend) was one of the most energizing experiences I've had since moving here two months ago.   I'd like to think of our three hour conversation as more of a motivational meeting than a "coffee date".  It was definitely worth the time. It was worth pushing other things off!   My to-do list will be longer tomorrow but I'm better off for it.  I can't wait for Corie to start up her new website and get going with some of the ideas she shared.  In the meantime, I'll keep enjoying her Instagram posts and be inspired by her life as a coach, Ironman athlete (soon to do Ironman Arizona), and mother to three.

Boosting Positive Energy
Life is feeling more settled now!   I'm not going to lie and say I feel super happy every single day or that I don't miss Asheville way more than I care to admit, but my roots are setting in!  Our new house is turning into a home, kids are making friends a little at a time, and I have much more mental energy to give to the things I love.  I'm quick to acknowledge the crappy  feelings and moods and then refocus.  And I've continued to remind myself that:

 Transplanting takes time!

Meeting with my friend for coffee this morning is one of several things that help to boost positive energy flow in my life.  With these boosts, my MOJO is coming back one day at a time.

Here are some of my biggest positive energy boosters (in no particular order):

1. Creating space.  I finally found MY space...my office of sorts.  This is my place where I can have my coffee, write, be messy, create, journal, read, learn and really...do whatever I want.  It's space to find inspiration and be with my thoughts.  I love it!  I actually took over the corner of the bonus room for this.  Nobody was really using this beautiful space as much as I thought they would so I just shifted things around to where I have my corner and we still have play/family/guest space in here.  My favorite thing about this room is that there is an abundance of natural light that fills it! And right outside my window are Aspen and Juniper trees with plenty of blue sky as a backdrop.

2. Trying new things.  Lots of new here!  Sometimes New New New can be Draining Draining Draining but sometimes it can also be quite helpful in shifting energy. Riding my bike downtown to visit my daughter's school and meet up with a friend was one activity that brought energy to my day.  It was about time I put my bike to good use!  I bought it years ago so I could train for a triathlon. The triathlon never happened so I think I'll stick to running for awhile until that bug hits me again. But using my bike to get around Bend was actually fun! I felt happy that I faced some of my fears of road biking and that I was able to enjoy this bike friendly city!!  It felt a little awkward at first when going down hill or traversing around a busy round-about but by the time I got downtown (only 3ish miles), I felt much more confident.

3. Talking to good friends.  Yes yes yes!  How freeing it is to be able to share our lives with a good friend.  What an incredible gift it is to have those friends we can talk to about our crappy feelings as well as the parts of our life that we are most joyful about.  And to know we are loved by them no matter what comes out of our mouths or how full of flaws we are (and vice versa).  This weekend I'm feeling pretty excited about seeing two of these special friends in MN for the Twin Cities Marathon. I can't wait to see Jenn rock her marathon and spend the rest of the weekend celebrating and soaking up girl time!

I get to see these two beautiful women in just a matter of hours! Both super speedy too!

4. Trail runs.  These speak for themselves..  Since moving to Bend, I've only run on the road a few times.  Almost all my runs are on the trails these days.  Gorgeous, life-giving, inspiring trails.  I'm beyond thankful.

Basically my backyard

5. Journaling.  It's no secret that writing in journals is something that adds to my life in positive ways.  I've written in a journal since I was eight years old.  In fact, I still have my third grade journal.  It's right there with the others...lining my book shelves.  Some of these journals should be burned...never to be read by anyone.  Some served as therapy over the years..a safe place to process.  And some are filled to the brim with inspiration, gratitude and love.  No matter what, writing for myself in a journal will probably be something I do forever.  My newest journal (below) is a gift from a friend.  I will be using it as my trail running/travel journal during this first year in a new place.  I expect to run many trails, discover new places, and be deeply inspired in the process.  Just holding and smelling this book's leather is a positive energy boost!

6. Intentional time with those I love.  This sounds so simple but when life gets busy, it is actually harder than I realize to push everything aside and be intentional about the time I'm giving to those I love the most.  This is why I think it's important to have a day of the week where my husband and I can connect without distraction. A day where we either have a date here at home, head out on a run, or go somewhere special.  Doing this with my kids is important too.  Lately, bedtime snuggles and read aloud has been a good time for them.  It usually takes some effort to slow down and make this intentional time happen but it's always worth it! It boosts positive energy for all of us!

Love that I can trail run and explore the world with him!

Love this man so much!!  He's home to me.

7. Unplugging.  Unplug. Unplug.  Note to self: Unplug!  Turn off the screens!  It's amazing how much life reveals itself when we don't always have our face pointed toward a screen.  Social media, texting, email...these are all great by themselves but isn't it the truth that they can also be what sucks so much of our life and energy if we don't find a balance?!

8.  Running with my dog Ashe.  I never really wanted a dog and I definitely didn't think I'd love a dog this much!  When we finally had to keep our promise to the kids about getting a dog, I was dragging my feet all the way.  But boy did we score big with Ashe!  Such a good good dog.  The best running companion we could ask for.  This dog is amazing!  He has incredible endurance, loves trails, is fantastic off or on a leash, enjoys swimming in the river and can catch a ball like nobody's business!  Oh, and he has excellent manners and patience with the kids.  Now that he is part of our family, I can't imagine life any other way.

What are some of your positive energy boosters?
