Date With Matt Fitzgerald

Today was one of those days that I did not feel like working out.  After a girl night with my mom last night, eating half a pizza, having a beer, a PMS like never before, and staying up too late, I was left feeling like a pile of poo and I really just wanted to sit on my bum and do nothing.  But I pushed myself to the gym anyway and I am so glad I did!  Do we ever regret working out?  Especially running.  I am always glad I did.

My Workout Today
Dynamic Stretching with Matt Fitzgerald (I'll get to that in a minute)
4 miles at base pace with 4 x 1min intervals @ 1 mile pace sprinkled in

4 miles in 30:42 (don't get confused at the 29:18 showing...it is the time remaining...I started with 60 min)  at a 1% incline so about a 7:40 average pace.  This is with the first .25 at a 9ish pace and then rest of the first mile at about a 8:13 pace.
1st three intervals were at a 6:00 pace (10.0 on the TM)
4th interval was at a 5:56 pace (10.1)

I feel great!  I have that red faced, sopping wet sweaty feeling that makes me feel tired and happy!  I feel myself returning!

Date with Matt Fitzgerald
This morning I was away from my kids and the Internet and I had time at my mom's house to just have my coffee and catch up on some reading.  As many of you know, I am reading Brain Training for Runners by Matt Fitzgerald and using his 24 week plan to train for the Newport Marathon in June.  I am a little behind with my reading so I've been doing what I can.  Today I caught up with his chapter : Cross Training as Brain Training.  Matt says :  "...I don't believe any runner can achieve his or her full potential without cross training."  He talks about three basic categories of cross-training:  resistance training, flexibility training, and nonimpact cardiovascular training.  He says : "Each improves the stride by modifying brain-muscle communications." I practiced some of the resistance training exercises this morning and now I'll be using them 2 times a week as part of my weekly workouts.
Fitzgerald recommends doing dynamic flexibility stretches as a warm-up before a high-intensity workout so today I took my Brain Training book and went through these recommended dynamic stretches.  They are much like I remember doing in college during indoor and outdoor track seasons.  Dynamic stretching exercises allow you to increase your flexibility through movements or exercises that mimic the way your muscles and connective tissues actually stretch during running.  All the dynamic stretching exercises take about 5 minutes so it isn't very time consuming to do before a workout.  A couple of these exercises include forward leg swing, lunge walks, lateral lunges, lateral leg swing, heel bounce, etc.

Here I am trying to learn the Tilt Walk.  Thanks for the pictures Matt!

I have to say that I did feel good and ready for my workout today after these dynamic stretches!  I'm so happy to be making my way through the book.  Amazing how a day mostly away from the computer allows we to get so much accomplished!  Matty and I greatly enjoyed our date!

Oh, and did I say that I love my new Saucony Kinvaras?!

Next Posts
I've got so much running through my head that I want to write about.  Next posts I'd like to mention:
*  Answering some questions by some of my readers about ways to get protein in their diet without meat.  I consulted my mom (she is so smart with this stuff) and a friend who also knows a ton about nutrition, fitness, etc.
*  Sharing my new favorite way to eat Quinoa
*  Listening to an interview on NPR this morning with the author of the book Alone Together, Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other. I'd LOVE to read this book or at least talk about the thoughts I had when hearing about it. I'd also love to hear your thoughts regarding the topic. In the meantime, check out this article on Newsweek:  One Hundred Tweets of Solitude and let me know your thoughts if it strikes a chord with you.
*  To Soy Milk controversy... What is up with people being so scared of soy now?

Thankful for:
*  Reminders to be in the moment and pay attention to what is important in life...giving my full attention to my kids at certain times during the day
*  My awesome workout
*  Beach house this weekend!  Yay!
*  Girl night with my mom last night
*  My blog
*  Thinking about building on and remodeling our home!

Oh, and thank you for all your funny comments on my post Hot Sexy Bitch.  I told my mom last night that I was kind of worried about my title since who knows who might find my blog searching for words like Hot Sexy Bitch.  I also told her that I bet more men might click on my blog with a title like that.  Funny thing is...I woke up with 4 new readers/followers and 3 of them were men!  Ha, do you think it was the title?

For those of you that missed it, this was a post about me wearing my pants on backwards to the gym.  I included a picture for those of you that wanted to see one.  This doesn't look too bad from the picture.  I took a picture of what the back might have looked like with my undies hanging out but my husband says he'd rather me not include it.

  3. Love quinoa!! Soy.. well because first unless it's organic it's GMO, and soy itself has a very high hormone content, too much estrogen. So to eat it occasionally is fine but some people live on it. I need to look into that book!

  4. I can't wait to hear the info on protein. Some of my *in real life* friends are freaking out on me that I'm not getting enough *protein* It's just such a misconception. I'm reading The China Study and it's going to completely solidify my impressions on plant based eating. I need to check out the book you're reading too!

  7. Hi mrs. 2% body fat 98% muscle?!?! Who are you!! I am loving this matt guys philosophy! I am all about cross training. I am going to have to try some of those stretches!! So fun that you had a girls night with your mom....those are the best. I am about to eat 1/2 a pizza right now too!! YOU ARE SO SPEEDY!!! AWESOME run, seriously amazeballs. I am so happy you are loving those cookies. You add white chocolate chips right?!?! Have an amazing time at the beach house...take lots of pictures and make sure to put your pants on the right way!! Love ya girl (even though I don't know you in real life, is that too much?)

  8. LOL... no... we do not ever regret working out! You've inspired me to begin my cross-training. And my stretching.
I think one of the issues with soy... in addition to the previously stated... is that it is in so much now. And you don't even realize it until you read labels and know how to decipher some of those ingredients. So some diets are overloaded with soy and the people eating these things don't have a clue.

  9. I love that picture of you taking a picture of yourself doing the tilt walk. Classic blogger move! :) I'm looking forward to hearing the quinoa recipe. That's one of those things I always hear about and have noooo idea how to prepare. And I really need to do more stretching. That was one of my goals for the year.

Why is it so hard for us to get ourselves to the gym sometimes when it's so good once we have? I'm always glad I went, even if it was a bad workout, once it's over.

Very interesting article. I see a lot of myself in there.

  10. Oooh. I might have to pick up that book.

Haha! Your pants-on-backwards picture is hilarious! When I was in 4th grade, I accidentally put my dress on backwards for school picture day. I noticed it right after they took the picture. In the yearbook photo, it is SO OBVIOUS. How did I not notice?!

  11. Looks like the other new guy Followers bailed on this post with no "Hot or Sexy" in the title. Here's my manly comment.... 1) you kicked a@@ on that run; and 2) you did that stretch BETTER than Matt Fitzgerald.

  12. Fantastic run today. Wish I hit the gym, instead I slept for 3 hours in the middle of the afternoon and ate chocolate donuts after the kids went to bed. I am determined to get with it tomorrow. I'll get back to you on the 100 tweets of solitude.

  13. Man, I need to incorporate dynamic stretching. I stink at doing anything low energy. I know in the long run,

  14. Forget the backward pants....I NEED that top!! And that skinny body that is sporting it?!? Let me know how I can get both? :)

Nice job on the new male count!!! I guess I need sexier titles, haha!!

  15. Nice workout!

Yay! I always do a dynamic warm up and I cross train and strength train. It's always good to hear you are doing a little something right, in somebody's opinion at least :)

Looking forward to all your upcoming posts, especially the soy one.

  16. Looking forward to the quinoa suggestions! I bought a box of the red stuff, and I quite honestly have no idea why or what I'm going to do with it now.

  17. i LOVE your top! And don't worry about the backwards pants- you rock them! HAH!
GREAT workout, and in such a nice gym... I'm jealous...
I ALWAYS feel better after working out- and find that the more I do the more energy I have!

  18. Nice workout!!! The feeling after a good workout is just so amazing. I can't see why my pea brain can't seem to remember that at times. I postpone my run for like 4 hours because I'm dreading it and then I'm miserable for those 4 hours when I could have been just giddy.....I'm a slow learner....

Interesting with the dynamic stretching. I can see myself falling on my head. I've really got to incorporate more stretching. I need to read this book...

You have a great body! You can totally wear your pants backwards and pull it off:) (To clarify-I'm not a sick twisted man who poses as a running mom of 3 on the internet...)

Love the Kinvaras. I wore them for my tempo yesterday. They are a good alternate for me with my Brooks. I think I will stick with them.

I read the article-lots of thoughts on that-I could go on forever. Hope you have a great weekend at the beach. That sounds just awesome!

  19. Ha! Beer, pizza and PMS! Brilliant! Or maybe not so much, but kudos to your for getting in the workout. For me it was always wine, chocolate and PMS...

  21. Love to hear about the protein, I'm always wanting more protein, but not loving meat so much I'm always pushing it on myself... not enjoying it!

  22. You are FAST! All of you whose blogs I read daily are FAST. I hope some of that "fastness" rubs off through the computer. Your date with your mom sounds like my kind of night. I always find that usually those runs or workout that you dread and don't even want to do are the ones that ed up being the best....when you think to yourself " man, I am so glad I did that..." Hope your weekend at the beach is relaxing.

  28. Beach house? Jealous! I'm sitting in snow :)
I'd love to hear more about how you get protein in your diet without alot of meat. I don't eat a whole lot of meat and know I could benefit from more protein too!

  29. I didn't realize soy was developing such a bad name. Is it because it has more calories? Or because it has developed a bad rep among environmentalists for being overfarmed? I thought it was just crazy Californians who were dissing it.

  30. My husband is an avid dynamic stretcher. Last year we lived in a ghetto apartment while our house was being built. I had foot surgery and was stuck in a cast all winter. We would go to the local laundromat to do our laundry. My husband would often go for a run while we were waiting for the loads to finish. My favorite memory of this time was of him doing dynamic leg swings up against the glass walls of the laundromat. Although he was on the outside, all the guests on the inside got quite the view of my husband in his running shorts as he swung his legs back and forth against the glass.

  31. I've been trying so hard to be good about cross training. There are days when I just want to run, and I force myself to do something different. I know it's good for me, but it's still so hard to do!!

your pants photo cracked me up : )

    ReplyDelete
  32. So...I never stretch before running- except for a race. But I always stretch after - but only static stretching.
I really ought to try some dynamic stretching. What a great reminder. Sounds like such a good book!

The picture cracks me up with the pants. We might have been separated at birth. I haven't read through all your comments yet, but i think some people have turned from soy because of fears they have about raised estrogen levels (?)and problems from that. I have not researched that yet. And of course there are plenty of cultures that rely heavily on soy...

Hope you are having a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  33. BTW- You are rocking the speed on the TM!! Great work!!

  34. sounds like a great date! Love the pants by the way, at least you can't tell when you look at them.
Hope youre having a blase at the beach house. :)

  36. You get to spend the weekend at a beach house too! How great. Angela (my partner), duh, you know that, always tells me to do a dynamic warm-up. I should trust her because she does have a masters degree in exercise physiology and has worked in a phys. therapy setting for 5+ years but I still rarely do it. I suck at stretching pre AND post run. bad girl.

I can't wait for your soy post! Did you already write it? If not, you should listen to Colleen's podcast about soy (vegetarian food for thought). It's great.

I am so behind on blog reading. Got to go catch up on your life... ;)
